BECOMING A COMMUNITY REPRESENTATIVE

See the world through different eyes! You are our face out in the community!

Being a Community Representative gives you the opportunity to make a difference in the community, with your local high schools, and most importantly, with families. It is a challenging and rewarding position. As a Community Representative, you are our face out in the community. It is very important for us to have well-trained, professional staff working with our students. You are able to work with youth and learn about other countries and cultures. You can make a personal contribution to the enrichment of young people from around the globe and can help to promote cross-cultural understanding.

Our students and families depend on you for support throughout their program; you are there for them from day one. You are the one who helps the families and students build and strengthen their relationship that will last a lifetime. Community Representatives should have the following key qualities:

Flexibility, motivation, dedication, warm heart, organized, integrity, commitment, mediator, teacher, involved in the community, interested in teens, good communication skills, and interested in global peace and understanding.

Community Representatives work with local high schools, families, and community leaders, and network in their area to find qualified, safe homes for our students. You are able to use your creative energy, enthusiasm, and people skills. It is all about talking to families and sharing the passion of what you do. You are giving families the opportunity to make a difference, to learn about other cultures and people, and you can show them that they can make a difference in the lives of youth.

Give the Gift that Keeps on Giving!

You will be building and developing relationships with local families and schools, and you may be involved with presentations at clubs and churches. You may also set up booths and search for leads. The best part about this position is that you can go everywhere. You can go out with your family at the soccer field, shopping - you can find host families in many places!

We offer an extensive Training Program. We feel it is important to train our staff so that they are able to provide a safe program to our families and participants.

We work closely with the DOS and CSIET and follow and maintain all of the standards and regulations so that we are providing the highest quality program, and pride our self on being a leader within the High School foreign exchange programs.

A Community Representative's Responsibilities:
  • Find and screen potential host families
  • Assist potential host families in completing the necessary paperwork and forms
  • Secure written permission for attendance from local schools and help enroll the student upon arrival
  • Provide orientations to all students and host families in your area
  • Meet with each student and host family at least once per month and complete reports indicating their program progress
  • Support all host families and students with any difficulties or emergencies they may face during the year and report all incidents to your Manager
  • HAVE FUN! Plan group activities, picnics, and gatherings for the students and host families in your area!
  • We ask you to always ask your self this question: “Would I be comfortable placing my own child in this home?”
  • Running a compliant program, working within CSIET and DOS Guidelines
  • Work with families and students to work through challenges they may have
  • Helping your student and family to learn and adjust to cultural differences

  • What are the benefits of becoming a FTW Community Rep?
    Being a Community Representative can be challenging, but also very rewarding. You can make a personal contribution to the enrichment of young people from around the globe, and help promote cross-cultural understanding. Community Representatives have an opportunity to spend time with young people from all over the world, experience their own community through new eyes, and get to know the people in their own backyard, and get paid a stipend too!
  • How much time will I need to put in to meet my goals?
    Each Community Representative has the ability to set their own goals, based on what their personal time allows. It is important to establish a realistic goal and our management team can assist you with the training and tools to assist you in achieving that goal.
  • What are my expectations?
    Our Community Representatives are responsible for assisting with promoting cultural exchange within their community and surrounding areas; finding and screening potential volunteer host families, assisting the host family with the hosting application process; securing written permission for attendance from the local high schools and assisting with the enrollment process upon the student's arrival; meet with each student and host family at least once per month and complete reports indicating their program progress; and assisting all host families and students with any difficulties or emergencies they may face during the year, and report all incidents to your manager. Initial and ongoing training is also a requirement of this role. These trainings include instruction within the Community Representative Training Manual, as well as attending telephone training conferences.
  • How will I get compensated and what if I do not meet my goals?
    The role of a Community Representative is an independent contractor role, therefore stipend compensation is based per student placement and ongoing supervision. This is individually addressed once an Independent Contractor agreement has been extended to an individual.
  • To Become a Community Rep do I need to Host myself?
    Although hosting is not required, it is occasionally necessary to be responsible for the housing of a student, should a student/host family match need to be interrupted and a rematch be required.
  • What Training and Support will I receive?
    Once you have been accepted as a Community Representative, you will receive our CR Training Binder and be scheduled for our conference line training sessions. It is through the trainings that you will begin to feel comfortable in your new role as a Community Representative, however; can expect ongoing support and guidance from both the management team and home office staff.
  • What happens if a family decides they do not want to continue hosting?
    We make every attempt to support our host families and students through an entire successful program experience, however; from time to time, unexpected situations to come about. We depend on the local representative to network into the host community to find a rematch family for a student, as keeping the student within the same school environment is generally in the best interest of the student and overall success of their program experience.
  • How do I find qualified Host Families?
    Community Representatives talk to schools, community leaders, friends and others they know. They go out in their community and invite friends, neighbors, and new acquaintances to become host families, and they build a relationship with local schools to enroll our students.
  • What benefit is it to the schools to have a Student attend their High School?
    Face The World has promoted global learning and exchange by offering opportunities for international high school students to experience life in the U.S. The goal of our cultural exchange program is to provide students, host families, schools and communities with a quality experience that will not only enhance personal growth, but will also establish lasting friendships.
  • How many countries do you accept students from?
    We accept students from around the globe; Germany, The Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy, Thailand, Taiwan, Korea, China, France are just to name a few.
